Foreign Service Officer Roa attended the 2023 Young Asian Diplomats Program

Mr. Roa attended the 2023 Young Asian Diplomats Program funded and facilitated by The Henry Luce Foundation, and The Asia Foundation in Washington, D.C, United States from 3 – 21 June 2023.
Senior diplomats from 16 countries in the Asia-Pacific region: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam attended the three-week program. Mr. Roa was the only participant from Papua New Guinea.
The program was facilitated by The Asian Foundation in partnership with the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University.
It encompasses interactive dialogues, structured discussions, leadership training, exposure to key institutions, and observation study tours to New York City, New Orleans, and San Francisco to grasp a greater understanding of America’s domestic influences on the making of its foreign policy. Mr. Roa described the program as one of the most intellectually rewarding and eye-opening journey for him.
From discussing climate change issues, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and international development to appreciating the local history of each city mentioned above. “It is welcoming to note from the program that many countries in the Asia–Pacific region embrace the shared values of democracy, the rule of law, good governance, and respect for the sovereignty of all countries to co-exist in peace and harmony.” “In my view, Papua New Guinea can leverage on these common values, and diversify its diplomatic relationship to the countries in the Asia Region for sustainable investments and economic growth.” said Mr. Roa.
He concluded and recommended that the Department needs to have an arrangement with the Georgetown University for advance diplomatic training given its high quality content and prestigious reputation in the Diplomatic Academy as one of the top School of Foreign Service in the world.
