His Excellency, Mr Joseph Varo, PNG Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium presented his letter of credence to His Majesty King Philippe of Belgium (King of Belgians) at the Royal Palace in Brussels on the 12^th of February 2025.

Presenting the letter of credence to the head of State His Majesty King Philippe signify Ambassador Varo’s authorisation to represent the Independent State of Papua New Guinea in the Kingdom of Belgium and to begin his role as the Ambassador. On that occasion Ambassador Varo also handed over the Letter of Recall of his predecessor former Ambassador Mr Joshua Kalinoe.

Ambassador Varo had a one-on-one discussion with the King on PNG – Belgium bilateral relationship. During the exchange, His Majesty noted the limited bilateral cooperation between Belgium and Papua New Guinea but acknowledge the presence of two Belgium companies involved in dredging activities in PNG. His Majesty inquired on PNGs current state of economy further expressed interest in the diversity and abundance of PNG’s natural resources. 

Ambassador Varo provided a brief overview of PNG’s economic situation and challenges, highlighting PNG’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity as well as the biodiversity. While acknowledging that PNG primary partnership is with the European Union, Ambassador Varo emphasizes his intent to pursue bilateral engagement with the Kingdom of Belgium in the areas of Trade and Investment, Climate Action, and Cultural and Educational Exchanges.

The one-on-one dialogue ended with both committed to further strengthen Papua New Guinea and the Kingdom of Belgium bilateral relationship and looking forward for greater and more cooperation in the future.
